App always stays on top when Assign To All Desktops

I can confirm that enabling "Displays have separate Spaces" in System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Mission Control "fixed" the problem for me (Sonoma 14.2). Though I'm not sure I prefer separate Spaces per display, this is at least a reasonable workaround until the real bug is fixed. I will also submit to Feedback - macOS - Apple

Someone on macrumors.com says this isn't resolved in 14.4.

In the meantime, I think I've discovered a workaround. This seems to only be a problem with "Desktop 1". I typically use Desktop 1 and 2. The workaround is to use Desktop 2 and 3 and not use Desktop 1 at all. So far, so good.

Do you have a reason to prefer not to have “Displays have separate Spaces” turned on? I can only think of one reason - if you want a single window to extend across more than one display. If you don’t need that, it is much more useful to turn this setting on.

I have the same issue. Apps that are set on "all desktops" are piled on top of all other windows on Desktop 1

If finder has multiple tabs, changing the tab will fix it.

But I have fixed it by not using Desktop 1 anymore

A similar problem existed in macOS 13 where after a reboot apps set to app spaces ONLY appeared on desktop 1 and had to be moved to a different desktop to then appear on all desktops.

Interesting. Thanks for the feedback. I wonder what the difference is. When you say you have "several desktops in each" display that makes me wonder if you have "Displays have separate Spaces" enabled. I have it disabled.

FWIW, I do NOT see this behavior on any of my macs.

I have Finder set to All Desktops, and I am using my mac with two displays, several desktops in each.

Switching to a different desktop keeps whatever application was in front on that desktop, in front.

Yes, I have "Displays have separate Spaces" enabled, ever since this became a thing in Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks...

Maybe this difference explains why I can't reproduce the bug.

I would test with this setting disabled, but I am now away on holiday, and don't have a second display easily available, until early next week.

The same issue persists for me:

• "Displays have separate Spaces" is off

I have multiple times over the last couple of years. It hasn't helped. I don't know of another company that's less interested in user feedback.
