MacBook Air screen was flickering before but is now back to normal

Hi,

A couple days ago I travelled by car somewhere and kept my MacBook Air in a backpack on the car floor. When I used it again a few hours later, I noticed the screen flickering a bit, sometimes with transparent horizontal lines. The number of horizontal lines depended on which app I used, and often the flickering would stop for a few minutes before resuming.

I tried out every solution I could find for this issue yesterday, including restarting my laptop, clearing the cache, resetting the SMC and the NVRAM, but nothing changed so I think it might be a hardware issue.

However, I tried using my MacBook again earlier in the morning, and while the screen did flicker like it did the day before, it returned back to normal eventually and I haven't noticed any issues since this afternoon (it is now around 9 PM). Should I still bring my device to an Apple store for repair, in case there's any damage to the internal parts?

Thanks!

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 14.1

Hi,

Try to check your MacBook Air with Apple Diagnostics if it reports display related error.

Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac - Apple Support

If it doesn't help or error is reported, you'd better contact Apple Support or take your MacBook Pro to your local retail AppleStore, Genius Bar or Apple Authorized Service Provider to be examined your MacBook Air there.

Based on personal experience...

About a Flickering Mac Screen:

A. Your Screen is Failing:

I have come across this on my 2017 MacThe connector between the LogicBoard and the screen was loose, and I had to send it in for service 11 times. Being during COVID, I had to send this in. Today, the option to take this in for service is an option. So take this in for service, ASAP.

B. So, Get this Mac Serviced...

Contact Apple, and setup a Genius Bar Appointment or see an AASP (Apple Authorized Service Provider) in your local area.

A. Contact Apple:

  • Contact Us - Choose Locations
  • Proceed from there as Necessary
  • NOTE: Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, calls are taking a bit linger to get through. And, that makes sense, because many are at home working out-of-the-house or are taking classes over-the-web, this they have more time on their hands to contact Apple Support. So, it might take a bit to get through to Apple Support. But, just stay on the line, and someone will be with you.

Or...

B. Contact an AASP:

  1. Go Here: Find Locations - Apple Authorized Reseller
  2. Click: Service & Support
  3. Enter: your location information
  4. See: if there is an AASP nearby
  5. Contact: an AASP that shows up, and find out more about the services that they offer to fix the Mac
