i switched the message expiration in settings from forever to 1 year, can i get my messages back?

so i’m completely out of storage and without even thinking i switched the message expiration from forever to 1 year to save some storage but i didn’t think about the last messages with my friend that passed away a few months ago. it’s not in my recently deleted either. when i go to her contact and press message, there’s nothing. it’s about all i have left from her and i’m just wondering if there’s anyway to get that specific conversation back. thank you.

Anything over 1 year has been deleted. If you have a backup made before you switched the setting, and you do not use messages in iCloud, you can factory reset your device and set it up again using the backup. You'll lose anything since the last backup but you might regain your messages.

Getting Messages Back:

Having reset this to one year, they are gone. You might be able to recover them from your Carrier: Log in to your Carrier's site, seeing if you can see a history of your messages. For me, it only goes back 90 days. So, try it, seeing what you see.
