Microsoft OneDrive processing all the files after Sonoma update, incredibly slow process?

I run OneDrive on a Macbook Pro with Sonoma.

But after updating to Sonoma, OneDrive is now processing changes to my 1,5 million files. It starts by counting all the files and then count down again as it processes changes, but no files has been changed.

It takes hours and hours when counting down - some of the times even days.

It is so frustrating as it does not sync my OneDrive files with the other users.

The files are from various SharePoints at my job.

Any ideas how to speed up the process or how to aviod it in the future? Or is this a know issue with Sonoma?

Picture is of my OneDrive window.

Hi Rovasli67

I have found, that if I use files on demand and not using the "keep always on this device" it works a lot better. It still counts once in a while, but it only takes a couple of hours to finish and not days.

It is so frustrating as I have no other ways to do it. And working with heavy catalogues with a lot of links (3.600 approx.) it is not an option to download and upload the files I work on.

I hope it will be solve at a later Mac-OS, as I can undestand it is Sonoma and Monterey that is the problem. Sonoma is based on Monterey and this issue was inherited with it.

I keep some data in OneDrive, but when the syncing problem between the MacBook and OneDrive became severe, I uninstalled OneDrive app form the Mac, and now only upload or download files from OneDrive manually, through the webpage. But, I have Word and Excel for Mac installed, and whatever file I manually add the Word or Excel webpages manually, would appear in the in those apps in the MacBook. But there's no automatic continuos syncing. I can't remember at the moment, if I disabled that, or how. I did that, while I was in Ventura. I'll let you know as soon as I remember that.

I understand most companies use Windows for work, mine too. I found its better not to keep OneDrive app in the Mac, but download whatever that's needed manually through the OneDrive web account. I was used to Linux, which didn't have any OneDrive app. OneDrive app in Mac never stop syncing, thinking that it is the only important app around, or at least Microsoft thinks that way. One day, tired of wasted energy, I uninstalled it, and now I have no headaches. iCloud does the syncing seamlessly, not eating up much energy. Even with that I am careful, whatever important I keep in an external drive. I need the syncing only for the task at hand, not more.

Just see what happens, if you uninstall OneDrive app, disable automatic syncing. And, when you start manually syncing/downloading Teams/SharePoint or any other web source. It would also keep your memory sharp too. 👌

I got a reply from Microsoft this time - and to sum up, Mac points to Microsoft and Microsoft points to Mac:

I will keep all my files as on demand for a period and then I hope it is solved with a later MacOS.

From Microsoft: I can understand how frustrating it is when your files are not syncing properly.

this seems to be a known issue with OneDrive on macOS Big Sur, which is the operating system that Sonoma is based on.

Hi Damgaard75,

I have exactly the same issue but I am on an iMac 27inch late 2015 with macOS Monterey. Tried all; reset Onedrive, Office-reset, removing and re-installing Onedrive. After re-installing syncing goes well for one or two days. Then connecting OneDrive hangs. After quitting OneDrive and restarting the processing changes issue starts... :-( In my case for 1,2 million files.

Thanks for your reply chdsl! The problem is that I have to consult files regularly. This is much more inconvenient in Teams / SharePoint than in the macOS finder. I have to say that after the last full reset, things seem to be going well for a while now. Unfortunately, use of iCloud is not permitted in our (completely Windows-based) organization. Hopefully things will continue to go well now. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻.

Hi Damgaard75, thanks for your reply! I didn't know that Sonoma is based on Monterey? Do you know or think that this issue only happens with this two OS's installed? I am surprised how many OneDrive users (also on Windows) have this kind of problems. And also for a long time. Actually, I find it scandalous that Microsoft (and Apple) apparently do not take these problems seriously enough and allow users to struggle with this (major) problem for so long.
