Where is the format APFS on Monterrey and Ventura OS?

OK!!! Just another example of INITIAL NOMENCLATURE CLASH. My intentions were: Machine 1, Machine 2 and Machine 3. Will attempt to move that over to Computer 1 (C1), etc...

Understand about the APFS, MBR and GUID incompatibilities which is basically the access problem of this subject.

Now, lets compound this even more. ALL the previous was on C1 (Ventura) and got caught up in something else and did not extend that to C2 (Big Sur/Monterrey) for investigation.

As noted before, Big Sur Install shows APFS GUID on Disk Utility but shows Journaled under Get Info. A further check on ** shows the gamut of for Format and Scheme; i.e. four setups for APFS, two for Journaled and two for PD. Under Scheme shows GUID, NBR and APM.

Now switch over to a 64G USB and it only shows Format: two Journaled and two PC formats. Shows all three of Scheme and after clicking on GUID the get all the formats as well.

Just went back to C1 to check and the USBs from before now showing all three Schemes and all Formats under GUID.

Guess this has been answered but do not understand why or how since just a very short time ago those Scheme did not show GUID AT ALL.

I have not checked but there should to be something under Help about APFS and GUID, where it is found and how it is used.

Tks for all the help especially in getting me to troubleshoot LOGICALLY instead of haphazardly. I should know better having been a troubleshooter of other electronics systems for almost 20 years before retirement.

Just for grins I plugged in my "BIg Sur Install" (USB A) drive on Monterrey, went to "Disk Utility", selected the install icon and clicked erase. LOW AND BEHOLD not only the Journaled formats come up but five different APFS formats show up.

This then tells me that for some odd reason that it seems to be drive specific but no hint on how that is selected. At present, all my USB Drives, other than installs, are set for Journaled which now seems to indicate that one a drive has been formatted into Journaled it will never be able to be formatted into APFS.

All this was done on the Ventura machine with the exact same results including using both methods of trying to install the OS.

Just another thought that may be causing this, that somehow there are particular Drives that have already been set to APFS and those are the only one usable for the APFS installation.

One the USB drive, there seems to be only one selectable. Only the internal data/OS drive show more than one on the Ventura machine.

On the Monterrey machine, everything is all fowled up with three drives showing as 'data' which are labled which I had labeled, one for Big Sur and one for Monterrey with only the Big Sur showing the volume. i.e.

As noticed, all of these show on the internal drive. There are two external drives that only show the volume.

Get info shows: all four of the Batestar 03 volumes as APFS. Both external (USB Drives) show Journaled though on the disk utility the Big Sur Install shows all of the available formats, Journaled and Apfs, while the unused only show the two Journaled formats. (this is on the Disk Utility). to date, the Big Sur Install drive is the only ont that shows the APFS formats among the twelve or so USB (A and C) I am using.

More research show there is a "Convert to APFS" in the Edit menu of Disk Utility. HOWEVER, it fails every time saying GUID Partition Table not found.

This is getting beyond complicated as this is the first mention GUID and seems to be totally propriatary, not just to Apple, but to only particular drives that already have it installed; SEEMINGLY.

Maybe it would be best to start all over with this as we/I seem to be chasing RAREBITS and getting off the subjects.

Image one is the "Get Info" of the drives on Monterrey/Big Sur (this is a secondary problem that is causing some of the rarebits (M2)

Image three is a third computer with multiple OS's (no part of this problem except for USB formatting)(M3)

Note M1 is the only one with an operational backup drive. M3 backup showing problems and not active.

M1 also the newest machine (2022 model); M2 is a 2018 model and M3 is a 2013 model. When m2 booted into Monterry it seems to be maxed for OS. M3 is maxed for OS with USB Drive OS 10.11 El Capitan but use with 10.6 (Apple works) if I can get it installed again. That 10.9.2 is the drive from an ancient Dome Mac which is PPC but have it for the data only on the drive.

At the present time, M2 is somehow booted into Big Sur but showing identical information as if booted into Monterrey. Not discussing this at this time other than what is happening on Disk Utility with both showing identical information. Only difference is which disk image is on top as active.

M1 is presently booted into Ventura.

Here we need to pick up the Disk Utility images from M1 and M2 a couple of notes above.

To answer that last question: I do not know other than getting error messages about the GUID Partition.

I just received a brand new 1T USB drive but it is USB C and I need USB A for M2. I have multiple 64mb USB C's available along with a 256MB that I am trying to put Snow Leopard (10.6) on for use with AW but it is available.

All USB drives indicate they are formatted as Journaled and only show the two Journaled formats when attempting reformat on both M1 and M2.

Only the Big Sur Install USB Drive picks up the APFS submenu but shows as formatted Journaled (4th info below).

Working with the 1T, presently unnamed, and the 256M USB drives presently mounted on Ventura. Screen show of Disk Utility added. Disregarding all references to PC info.

Select Volume: USB Sandisk (data only - used for info only) . . . Select Erase and dropdown menu only shows journaled with scheme Master Boot Record. Cancel and select Batestar 06. Select Erase and dropdown menu only shows journaled without scheme line.

Select Volume: SanDisk Ultra Media (unformatted 1T). . . select erase and dropdown menu only shows Journaled with scheme Master Boot Record. Cancel and select UNNAMED. Select Erase and dropdown menu only shows Journaled without scheme line.

OOOOPSSSS! Just noted that there is an additional pick on Scheme as Apple Partition Map which I now suspect as GUID Partition SCHEME???? However, still nothing about APFS under Format when applied. Now also understand that MBR reference. BOY DO I HATE INITIAL ACRONYMNS!

Now just wondering if it is necessary to format to Journaled APM and then use MAY get APFS for the Volume???
