Failed to open a connection to the device (-21345) Epson Scanner, Sonoma 14.1

I have downloaded the latest ICA scanner driver for OS 14.x from Epson for my Epson Perfection V500 Photo scanner. I have also reselected the visible scanner in System Settings "Printers & Scanners." I've even removed it, and then re-selected it. I get the "Failed to open a connection to the device (-21345) alert or "No plugin found" depending on whether I'm trying to scan with "Image Capture" or with the "Vuescan" app. Sometimes after a restart one or the other will work, but there's always a bunch of song and dance. Even unplugging the scanner and re-plugging it.

It's a BEAR to get it to work no matter what steps I've followed in forum discussions that have already closed. Seems it's been a regular problem.

Any suggestions? Shooting something with an iPhone feels primitive with a nice scanner nearby.

Today I found an updated driver for macOS 14 Sonoma available on the Epson web site, "ICA Scanner Driver version 5.8.23 for Image Capture + ".

https://epson.com/Support/Scanners/Perfection-Series/Epson-Perfection-4490-Photo/s/SPT_B11B176011?review-filter=macOS+14.x

After downloading and installing the new driver I turned on the Epson Perfection 4490 Photo scanner, then launched Image Capture. I clicked on the Epson scanner's name in the Image Capture box at top left. After about 20 seconds of silence I got the same error message as before, -21345. I quit Image Capture, then launched it again. This time it connected to the scanner after only a second or two, and seems to be working normally.

Thank you, Epson engineers.

Forgive my taking a while to update my own post. I was in the process of back-and-forth emails with Epson and a house full of out-of-town guests. Techs at Epson were very attentive to my problem, but it was a week or so in the process.

Successful result: They sent me a link to install "Event Manager" and gave me detailed instructions for steps after doing so. I won't post all of those instructions because of their detailed questions and my responses and model scanner, I think my solution from them might be specific to my case. I wouldn't want anyone to further foul up their problem by assuming the same would work for them. At least I pinned it down to something Epson, rather than Apple, could help me with. You can go from there.

FYI: Their description of what I downloaded was this:

Event Manager includes a utility called Scanner Monitor. Scanner Monitor manages / monitors Scan button functionality. Scanner Monitor also writes the firmware code to the scanner and doesn't have the timeout limitations that occur when using Image Capture to initialize the scanner.

So it seems that there was a short length of time for my scanner to be connected for use with Image Capture and that for some reason the attempt was timed out before it was accomplished.

Good luck to others with the problem. I hope this helped a little.

I also have an Epson scanner (4490 Photo) that is not working well with Image Capture in Sonoma. I tried all your suggestions. What made it work today was

  1. With the scanner powered on and connected via USB, quit Image Capture.
  2. From the Apple menu select Force Quit then in the new window select Finder and click Relaunch.
  3. After the Finder restarts, launch Image Capture and select the scanner.

This may work for you. Or maybe not. Hello, Apple?

Today I was able to get the macOS to communicate successfully with an Epson 4490 Photo scanner by:

  1. Closing all apps.
  2. Turning on the scanner and connecting it to a USB port on a 2020 Intel Mac (Sonoma 14.1.1).
  3. Restarting the iMac.
  4. Going to Apple menu > System Settings > Printers & Scanners, then under Scanners I clicked on Perfection 4490. In the next pane I clicked on the "Open Scanner" button. That launched Image Capture and it recognized and communicated with the scanner.

Going through Printers & Scanners was the suggested by Apple guidelines seen here: Set up a scanner to use with Mac - Apple Support

I cannot predict if this will work tomorrow, or work for you.

Over three days of testing Image Capture and the Epson scanner, this behavior has been consistent: with the scanner turned on and connected to the Mac, Image Capture fails to connect the first time it is launched. When I quit Image Capture and immediately re-launch it, it succeeds in communicating with and scanning on the Epson Perfection 4490.

"If at first you don't succeed, ..."
