Mac OS Sonoma issues on my iMac

I installed the Mac OS Sonoma on my iMac and it’s pretty much useless at this point.

specs:

iMac retina 4K, 21.5” 2019

3.6gHz QuadCore intel core i3

graphics Raedon Pro 555x 2Gb

memory 8Gb 2400mHz DDR4

My HD has 820.85GB available of 1TB

Restarted normally and was unable to use any programs. Activity monitor shows 1800-2000 threads and over 500 processes running. System use is around 5%, User use 9% and 85% idle.

I powered down and restarted in safe mode. My desktop files loaded once, then the computer went to sleep and it’s been 20 minutes since I started trying to wake it up. Anything I click on to try and open just bounces up and down and nothing happens.

If I try to click on the Apple in the upper left I get the rainbow wheel.

i started all this at 1030pm and it is 2hrs later and I’m posting this from my phone.

Im the only user. Im at a loss here. Anyone have any ideas?

A little pressed for time to do a Complete Analysis of the report

Further, I am not a Hardware Expert though I know of a few Contributors who are way more knowledgeable om this subject.

If we, you and me , are lucky and they pop in later today, perhaps they can off more details on the HD Failing Aspect in the below

From these old eyes, the Runtime it took for the Etrecheck to run 52 minutes, 46 seconds is a tip off the drive is possible in trouble

The in the Performance of the Report the Read Speed 31 MB and the Write Speed 29 MB seems to confirm this finding

Am making two more suggestions

1 - Make a Time Machine Backup ASAP and if possible a second TM Backups on a Separate Drive

2 - Hold off panicking or make an rash decisions until the hopefully addition Contributors like @HWTech and other like them to offer additional suggestion on the condition of the 5400 RPM Mechanical Drive

Q - Runtime: 52:46

Q - Failing hard drive - This computer has a hard drive that appears to be failing.

Q -  disk0 - APPLE HDD HTS541010A9E632 1.00 TB (Mechanical - 5400 RPM)

Performance:

  System Load: 2.12 (1 min ago) 1.75 (5 min ago) 1.44 (15 min ago)

  Nominal I/O usage: 22.50 MB/s

File system: 197.82 seconds (timed out)

Q -  Write speed: 29 MB/s

Q -  Read speed: 31 MB/s

We are speaking of this computer in link below ?

iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2019)

From your above description is apples to be configured with the 1 TB Fusion Drive.

Is that correct ?

First suggestion is to shutdown the machine by any means including holding the Power Button until it shuts down

Disconnect ALL external devices

Power up in Safe Mode

Does it machine boot any better ?

Oddly enough, after letting this computer sit all day and doing nothing other than turning off adobe creative cloud and macscan, it is currently working as it should....

Its really baffling. The earlier replies and initial posting were done from either my phone or ipad because the iMac wasnt useable....and Im writing this on the iMac with no rainbow wheel or noticeable lag.

Thank you too

To Post the Etrecheck Report suggest referring to the illustrations below

First image is How to Copy the Text Of the Report

The second image is How to and where to Post the Text of the Report

Further and in good faith, I will post an Etrecheck Report of one of the 3 different computers I own and operate

This too is only intended to illustration what your report may look like

PS - love the ducks in the background

This is the correct computer. In safe mode it's better but still really slow. I was able to download Etrecheck and it was scanning, but would go to sleep and stop running. Temporarily I turned off the sleep features.

I also created a "dummy" user account to see if the issue could be eliminated as I'd read that suggestion elsewhere in the Apple forums.

Etrecheck appears to have done something but I can't see what the results of the scan are. This is as far as I can get. And yes, this is not in safe mode at this point. The second smaller window is the dialogue box that appears when I click on how to use....

I have the same issue, since the update my IMac has literally been barely working, rainbow wheel and taking 30 seconds plus to open an email.

its used for my business and is unusable. The irony is I updated my MacBook Pro at the same time and that doesn’t have any issues at all. I have a 2019 IMac 27inch retina screen model.

the ram and storage is only partially used.

any help gratefully received.

Below is related to your " macscan " application

There are no known Windows-like Viruses in the wild that self replicate and affect macOS, because of the underling UNIX  Foundation and Permission Limitation.

The Operating System resides in a Sealed and Read Only Volume that can not be opened by the User nor by Third Party Applications.

The only Entity that can open and modify or alter this Volume is Apple.

That would occur when an update or UpGrade is performed.

The Only thing this Antivirus software is protecting is the Bank Account of the Developers and for zero return to the User aside from the problems this software creates.

AntiVirus Developers purposefully Market their product to create a “ Fear Factor “. In so doing, creating a False Need for their Product.
