Hotspot stays connected after device is turned off.

Hi, I’ve noticed recently that my hotspot has been staying connected even after I turn my connected device off.

I’m using an iPhone 14Pro and the device I connect is a Samsung laptop running windows 11. This has only recently started being an issue.

So, when I sleep my laptop by closing the lid it turns off, (no lights on to show it’s still active) but my hotspot still has the green link icon in Dynamic Island. When I go into control centre it says there is one connection and it stays like this until I manually turn off the hotspot.

Aside from possible battery drain it’s just really annoying why this has started happening.

Any help would be appreciated. It may just be as simple as changing a setting as both devices were reset to factory recently.

Thanks in advance.

No, that's not expected behavior at all. The Hotspot should drop the connection once the laptop has been disconnected. But, for some reason, it appears that your phone doesn't recognize that.

A couple of things to try:

  • Update your phone to the latest version of iOS if you haven't already.
  • Reset your network settings. Settings>General>Transfer or Reset iPhone>Reset>Reset Network Settings. You will lose saved Wifi passwords but nothing else.

  1. Can I set Mobile Hotspot to automatically turn off in case I forget to turn it off?
  2. Yes, you can set Mobile Hotspot to turn off automatically for some devices:
    • Android - Power Mode
    • BlackBerry® - Auto Shutoff Timer
    • iOS - Automatically shuts off when the hotspot is inactive
  1. Note: Some devices may never stay inactive long enough for this feature to work because apps, updates and more are often running in the background.
