iPhone won't maintain connection to Wi-Fi long enough to complete watchOS update

every time I try to do the latest update for my Apple Watch I keep getting a message that my phone is not connected to the wi-fi. I know it’s a huge update (#10) but I shouldn’t lose connection in my home. My phone is a 13.

Wifi will disconnect when the iPhone's display turns off/goes to sleep.

Plugging your phone in to power keeps wifi on.
