Numbers: Freeze Panes Disappear when Typing

In numbers, I can freeze panes just fine (I have the first column frozen and I have many many columns afterwards for entering data). But when I go to type something into the farther columns, the column I chose to freeze disappears. This is frustrating because I need to be able to see what row I’m entering data into.

iPhone 12, iOS 17

You can't freeze panes in Numbers the way you can in Excel.

In general you don't need an Excel-like freeze panes functionality because the Numbers design favors multiple special purpose tables on a sheet rather than one big expanse of cells.

In Numbers you can define up to five columns on the left as Header Columns and freeze those. You can also define up to five rows at the top as Header Rows and freeze those. See the Add, Remove or freeze header rows and columns section here:

If you're feeling the need for freeze panes Excel-style, then you might consider breaking up your work into smaller tables.

If you haven't done so already have a look at the templates at File > New in your menu. They are good examples of efficient document design in Numbers.

You use the word "pane" but I think you mean headers.

Yes it's true that on iPad and iPhone once you enter a value in a cell the headers become temporarily unfrozen because the screen is generally small and generally you want to enter data in nearby cells where you know your way, so the headers get "out of the way". Tap on OK at the top of the screen to dismiss the keyboard and restore the frozen headers.
