update software
Several apps are telling me to update. I can't do so as I need more modern software

What is your question? As your information is presented, there is little for us to evaluate and respond to. Are you saying that the apps are unable to run with your current operating system? If they can run, then what is the problem? I you would provide the year and model of your Mac and its current operating system version, then we can tell you whether the OS can be upgraded, which would also allow the apps to be updated.
