Apple Music goes silent after song change with AirPlay speakers

I'm using an M1 Max MacBook to stream music to a Denon Home 350 using Airplay. Frequently, the sound will stop after a song change, although the play icon shows that Music is playing, and the progress bar is moving. The only workaround is to use the AirPlay menu to switch back to the MacBook speakers, then switch back to Airplay.

I've made sure that all of my songs are "checked" and that the speaker's firmware is up-to-date. This doesn't happen when I stream from Music on my iPhone or when I have Airplay globally enabled in MacOS, only when I select the Airplay source from Music's built-in menu.

The problem seems to come and go intermittently, some days it works fine for hours, sometimes it's only an occasional problem, and at other times it's literally impossible to listen to Music.

For various reasons I would prefer not to stream all the audio from MacOS and only stream from Music.
