External hard drive issues

External hard drive show up on my desktop, but sometimes, just disappears and I have to restart to use it. I also want to sort my file on the drive my date. Any idea how I can accomplish this?

External hard drive not showing in finder I downloaded an app that changes the format of external hard drives from NTFS to something for Mac. However, I did not use the app and uninstalled it using app cleaner. Since then, my external hard drives do not show up in the finder's sidebar and I do not know how to reverse the problem and bring them back. The box for showing external hard drives is checked in the preferences. I have tried reconnecting the hard drive, using different hard drives, and restarting. Nothing has worked.

Need help with an external drive I bought a Western Digital "Elements" external drive recently and cannot back up my macbook laptop. It is shown in as an external drive in the finder side bar and I can see it in the disk utility but I cannot do anything with it. It looks like i could use it like a flash drive/thumb drive to drag and drop files that doesn't work. What's going wrong? Matt

OK, so there are two questions here.

This sounds very much like a loose or bad cable between your external hard drive and your Mac. Have you tried using an Apple-branded cable?
To sort the files like you've described, just go to the Finder and select your external drive. Double click on the folder you want to sort to open it. Click on View-->Sort By-->(choose the type of date)
