mail on mac in attempting to import messages still preparing hours later

Mail app upon opening gives message that messages need to be imported due to an issue. Upon choosing continue the app sits on "preparing to import messages" Yesterday it started to import but this morning after allowing to run for close to 24 hours it was stuck at the same number and the amount of time left keeps increasing. I quit the app and restarted the process and now it just sits at "preparing to import messages"
