I had ocsp.apple.com blocked in my /etc/hosts file,

this breaks software update (but not the app store)

I recommend you try to update to 13.61 first. Then reboot after that completely installs. Then attempt to upgrade to Sonoma 14.1. If updating to 13.61 gives you trouble, try doing it while in safemode. Then attempt another try at updating to 14.1 while logged in normally.

Is the Date and Time on the computer accurate for your location ?

Coming back to the topic. Call your internet provider to check your internet connection. Or, try to upgrade through someone else's internet connection.

As your computer is " My Current macOS is Ventura 13.0," with was the very first version of Ventura

You may require manually downloading the FULL Version of Ventura

Back in Terminal and copy this command and again hit the return key

softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 13.6.1

It will manually download the Full Version about 12.xx GB in size

It will not Auto launch but place a new Application in the Applications folder of the computer

It is called Install Ventura

When ready, launch it like any other application and follow the Prompts

FWIW, you might want to try reinstalling Ventura from Recovery Mode. It should download the latest version. Then, you can hopefully upgrade to Sonoma from there.

Have you tried installing Sonoma from the App Store, rather than from Software Update?

Sonoma is compatible with MacBook Pros released in "2018 and later" – so your machine should qualify for it.

This is very unlikely to be it – but how much free space do you have on that MacBook?

I'm just trying to rule out the remote possibility that your drive is too full to download the update, and that there is some bug causing the Mac to show you a grossly misleading error message.

If the internet connection is not faulty, his Mac would reach out.

You have a problem with your internet provider. Its been timed out. Call them to check your internet connection. They can even do that remotely.

Try running this command in the Terminal while in Safe Mode.
