Sonoma problems with desktop folders

Since updating to Sonoma, when I create a new folder on my desktop, it is automatically filled with all the other files on the desktop. I now have several folders with identical content, and when I try to delete any of them, it says all of them will be deleted. I want the content, but not all this clutter. Is this a setting I need to change, or a glitch?
