MacBook Pro OS password reset

Trying to reset my 13” 2017 MacBook Pro running Ventura 13.6.1. I’ve backed up my MacBook to an external SSD. I have erased my credit cards and log out of Find My and I’ve logged out of my Apple ID. I shut down and restarted in recovery and it’s just showing a picture of a padlock on the screen with a bar to enter a password. My password to get into my MacBook obviously isn’t the password it wants. I don’t know what password it wants. I don’t remember, how do I erase all data and reset my MacBook Pro without it ? Or what would that password possibly be?

Sounds like you have a firmware password lock enabled. If you don't know the firmware password, then you will need to take the laptop to Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider along with valid & acceptable proof of purchase (usually needs your name & system serial number on it) and an acceptable form of ID. I recommend you ask for what paperwork & ID are acceptable before making the trip. Here is an Apple article showing the firmware lock screen:
