Is there a way to get access to an older iPhone that is locked with a passcode, without deleting the data?

There is no iPhone called "iPhone 2G". The second model that ever shipped, in June 2008, was the iPhone 3G.

You might be able to reset it with the aid of Finder or iTunes running on a Mac or a PC. However, if you do that, everything on the device (except for perhaps its association with your Apple ID) will be wiped out.

Getting Back Into this:

If you cannot unlock this, then you're stuck with a brick. If you have a proof of purchase (i.e. sales invoice or original packaging), then Apple would unlock it, and you can get access to it once more. So, set up a Genius Bar Appointment, asking them if this a faulty device.

The only way to unlock it is to wipe it and reload iOS on it.

This isn’t possible because the phone is ancient and not supported anymore.

Well, it's a Catch 22. You can't get into the phone because it is locked. Because you don't know the password, you will have to reset the phone to set it up again.

But, resetting the phone will erase all of the data on the phone.

Very few carriers even provide a 2G signal anymore, so it would not make much sense to spend much time trying to get into a phone that won't even work with your carrier.
