I need to create a custom placeholder

I need to create a placeholder in a custom shape to match the shape of a client's logo. I have the images in .ai and PNG formats with transparency, but anytime I try to set them as placeholders, when I insert images into them the image ends up just being a standard rectangle. How do I create the custom shape as the mask shape for the images that get applied?
