Trying to sync new iPad with iMac OS Monterey. Doesn't work.

I bought a new iPad from Argos almost a year ago but did not have time to set it up until now. I have an iMac OS Monterey 12.7 and want to be able to copy some files from this computer to the iPad. But I have not yet been able to activate the iPad properly because it keeps rejecting my Apple ID details ,even though they work fine on my computer itself. At first, I did the fingerprint login so I wouldn't have to go through Apple ID every time. I thought it was all settled when my finger-print was finally accepted. But now it's gone. I can only open the iPad starting screen but then the process of logging in to Apple ID  starts and nothing I do is validated. I've been trying all day and have given up as I don't know what's wrong.A USB cable which came with the iPad doesn't fit into the ports on my iMac so I haven't plugged it in. However the iPad does turn on (for a short time) when I hold down the top button on the side of the iPad.

Last issue first...

At some point, it may be necessary to make a direct USB connection between your iPad and Mac. If your Mac has the older USB Type-A (rectangular) connections - and your iPad was supplied with a USB-C to USB-C cable - you are going to need to acquire a USB3 Type-A to USB-C cable:

Apple does not currently market this type of cable (above illustration is from mophie), however, they are readily available from good computer stores and online retailers.

Returning to your iPad, are you able to successfully enter your iPad Passcode and gain access to iPad settings - or are you locked-out of your iPad?

If your iPad has a USB-C port, the iPad will have been supplied with a USB-C/USB-C cable. Should your Mac also has a USB-C port, you will already have a suitable cable.

USB-C to USB-C

If your Mac only has the older USB Type-A ports and your iPad is USB-C, you will need the cable that I have already illustrated (USB Type-A to USB-C):

USB Type-A to USB-C

Older model iPads have a Lightning connector. Depending upon their age, the iPad will have been supplied with either a USB Type-A to Lightning - or a USB-C to Lightning cable.

Thanks for your reply Lotus Pilot. I have a cable like the one you showed, it fits my iMac but not the ipad. The problem is not with my Mac but with the iPad. I haven't had one before, it's new (2022) 10.9 inches. I made the mistake of opting for Touch ID , doing the fingerprint process, and was given a passcode. I lost this code and now can't do anything at all with the iPad nor is it recognised by my computer. I've ordered a USB-C cable. Hopefully it will connect iPad to my Mac.
