Migration paths are listed there (including Podcasts app and Books app, though exporting anything still in iTunes U might be a problem now.

The iTunes U service shut down some time ago. Existing content was generally shifted into Podcasts. The standalone app is now redundant, it has no service to connect to. It may be crashing on launch because it hasn't been updated to work with newer versions of iOS.
