Mac Restart/Partial Reset?

Okay, so my Mac (MacBook Pro 14" late 2021) just about gave me a heart attack. I was uninstalling Xcode beta and was going through Terminal to clean up any residual files when it started giving me an iCloud connection error. I think to myself, OK, I'll just sign back in. For some reason, Terminal had erased my passwords, so I decided to restart the computer. Only when I did this and the computer turned back on, it started going through part of the new Mac setup process. At this point, I thought that I'd lost everything. I went through the setup process only to find that while all my files were intact, all of my applications were signed out and I had to manually sign back in to everything. Also, personalization settings were reset to factory version.

Yep, I will be on a weekly backup schedule from here on out. What was weird is they didn't just close out, they were reset to factory settings. For example, on all of my Microsoft applications, it asked me to either buy a license or sign in with an account that had one. With the stock Apple apps, it gave me the "Welcome to [insert app]" splash screen. I have a spaced repetition flashcard app (Mochi) that saves all data locally, all this data was lost. But oddly enough, my Safari pinned tabs persisted.
