Removing information on old hard drive before recycling at a disposal center.

I have an old thicker-style iMac from probably 9 years ago that has been replaced and I want to know if I have to remove the old hard drive and destroy it or if I can destroy it without taking it out. I have very arthritic hands and it would be difficult for me. So, I guess what I'm asking is if there id a self-destruct process I can do on it.
