iCloud Confusion

I am confused by iCloud. I have a MacBook Pro running Sonoma.

I originally thought that the purpose of iCloud was to store a kind of "backup" copy of your files in the cloud. In fact it seems to be more about file sharing between devices. I do know I can access my MacBook files on my iPhone. Fair enough.

But why does it seem to REMOVE files from my hard drive? The files still take up space on my hard drive, but often I can't open them until they are "downloaded." It's like I have "ghost" files on my hard drive that don't come to life until they are downloaded. This is a major problem if I'm trying to access a file but in a situation where I don't have internet access (e.g., on a plane).

Is there some way of making iCloud leave the files on the hard drive alone?

Thank you.

Everything on iCloud is also on your Mac. Except…. If you elected to optimize storage, then some files may be offloaded to iCloud only. You can turn that off at system settings - Apple ID - iCloud - iCloud Drive.

Perhaps you should try & save the files you want on the Mac, to its hard drive;

or an external drive it may access offline. Then any other similar files might only

be a vestige of shared content. Files shared by iCloud are temporary access.

And 'iCloud Drive' is another aspect of this type of insanity; with variables.

Each aspect has some different rules; these don't necessarily mix.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Now I am more confused than ever. I thought I WAS saving everything to the hard drive. But now that I look at Finder, I have to click on the iCloud drive to see my documents. There is no documents folder under "users" on the hard drive.

How did this happen? And if my files are on the iCloud, why are they taking up space on may hard drive? And what is being backed up to my external drive when I do Time Machine backups?

All I want is my documents on the hard drive. Do I need to copy them from iCloud to my hard drive to do this?

Maybe I need to go to the genius bar and have someone look at my computer?
