Widgets hiding desktop files
When I place a couple widgets top right, files saved to the desktop are hidden behind the widgets and I can't see them. Is there a way to make sure desktop files are never hidden by desktop widgets.

Try booting into Safe Mode then restart normally. Sometimes that will fix anomalies.
Put them on the left?
From this article from Apple and their Illustration the Widgets are placed on the Right of the Screen

" Click the date or time at the top right of the screen . . . "
Notification Center on your Mac
That's exactly what I was expecting to happen, but it did not. I had saved a couple files to the desktop and could not see them so wondered what was going on. I opened up a Finder window and went to desktop, and there the files were. I then realized they were hidden behind the widgets. An un-intuitive behavior for sure and don't know if a bug or not.

It was "clearly defined" in the original post.

This seemed to solve the problem. Tested it out in safe mode, and it worked as expected, files moved off the widgets if I tried to place them on them anywhere. Booted normally and all seems good.
Thanks for the simple but effective solution!!
A silly answer, but I like them on the right - open windows tend to be on the left so I can see the widgets on the right with open windows I am using.
On my Macs, if I have files on my Desktop (which I never do), the files move out of the way if I add Widgets on the right. Are you running Sonoma 14.1?
Yes, running 14.1
Then I don't know. If I have a file/folder on the top right, and I add a Desktop Widget also to the top right, the file/folder slides down underneath the Widget.

The OP is referring to Desktop Widgets.
Using the Generic term Widgets do apply to both types of Widgets

Clearly, am have a very bad day.
Mea culpa
You're welcome. 😎
This worked for me, too. Nicely done, @dialabrain!
