It seems that my iPhone 14Pro will not bluetooth connect to my MacBook Air. I saw this question for an iPhone 11 but the results are the same today. Why then promote "new features" like iPhone widgets on the desktop like for example the batteries icon?

Bluetooth pairing between an iphone and computer is not supported. It never has been.
It is completely unnecessary. All that’s required is that the devices be signed into the same Apple ID, have Bluetooth and WiFi turned on, and be in proximity to each other.
While you can add iPhone widgets to your Mac, they do NOT require that your iPhone and your Mac be paired over Bluetooth.
I use the Battery Widget on my MacBook Pro. It only shows devices which are paired with my MBP. So, it will show the charge of my MBP and earbuds and mouse, for example. But it does not show the remaining charge on my iPhone. Which when you think about it, is already shown on the iPhone, so all I need to do is look at my iPhone.

If you have updated your Mac to MacOS Sonoma, you can add widgets in Settings on your Mac. You don't put your iPhone widgets on your Mac. They now have their own set of widgets. This will give you more information --> Use widgets on your Mac desktop - Apple Support
No, but one of the widgets that appealed to me was the battery monitor, which it said would let me know the status of not only the MacBook but the iPhone as well but if they aren't paired, it doesn't work. I can certainly live without it but don't understand the prompts to do something that doesn't apply.

Are you sure that the description of the battery widget said that it would show you the status of multiple devices, at the same time? Or is it just that widget is written in such a way that it can display the status of whatever device (iPhone or MacBook) it happens to be running on?
It is, it says "connected bluetooth accessories". Silly me that thought that would include my iPhone. There is room for more than one battery status. Of course I can look at the phone, it seemed like a useful quick glance icon to have. Thanks to everyone that took time to read the comment.
If it isn’t necessary then they shouldn’t tell us to put my iPhone widgets on the desktop. The won’t work. Airdrop works fine for moving things from one to another but irrelevant in this case

Maybe it was referring to paired accessories? Like AirPods?
There is. Well if you have AirPods and Apple Watch you can still check many gadgets. I'm glad you solved it
