Vidbox VHS Transfer Stopped Working When Mac Mini Upgraded to Sonoma!

I loved the way the Vidbox transferred my old VHS, VHS-C, and 8mm to .mp4. They are old, old tapes and what can you expect? I know they won't deteriorate any further now that they are digitized. However, I just upgraded to Somoma 14.1 OS (I think from Big Sur...) and it no longer works.

I reinstalled the Vidbox software, and it goes as far as saying the driver is installed successfully...BUT...it doesn't go to the recording screen.

I called the company, and their only comment? "That's a known issue: we can email you when there is a solution." Like, wouldn't say when to expect that. Essentially, the whole set up is a waste now.

So, I would say that if you have Sonoma, do NOT get this device.

And if anyone has a clue on what to do, I would be most appreciative!

You say you just updated to Sonoma. That means your Mac can run an earlier OS.

I wonder if Sonoma will let you install an earlier version of macOS on a spare external drive, so that you can dual-boot (and use the older system when you need to do work with the Vidbox digitizer & software).

yes, MaryRansom, +1 to the Littles and Servant of Cats for their most excellent answers....here's the link to the support page/software for your Vidbox....

https://vidbox.company/downloads/

it does mention it works with Mac OS 10.13 or later, and it does support M1 Macs.... the version is 2.0.16a, which I', guessing means "alpha" . I don't think it stands for "Aluminium" or "Apple" or "Alpenhorn"/, anyhew..... Sonoma is pretty darn NEW, as in the Latest version of the Mac OS, so it's on the developer/maker of the software/application to update their software/Application to work with Sonoma, the dual boot idea has a lot of merit and potential, however I've never dual booted a Mac in my life... I don't have Sonoma, so can't say for sure if it'll let you install an earlier version of MacOS on a spare external drive and boot up/start up from THAT, I can't see any obvious reason as to WHY it wouldn't work, it ought to/should work.... LET me go loook that up for you... Oh, by George, by Gosh, it looks you can sure can do that....see link:

2 GB drive, is that it?? is that a flash USB drive/stick/thumb drive??? Seems pretty tiny to me....I'd suggest trying to use an 8 to 16 GB drive at the very least.... maybe you have an external drive you can plug into your Mac Mac mini and use that as drive #2....

Device Not Working with Sanoma:

macOS Sonoma is very newer, and has roughly just ben released. The Developers probably have yet to do their part in making this work.

A. Single-Out this User:

See if you can install this using a new user. If so, then it is an issue with your current user. If not, then it is an issue with the entire MacOS.

B. Recover from a Time Machine Backup:

Did you backup your Mac, prior to this? If so, then restore your Mac from that. So that nothing is lost, you'd backup you Mac prior to doing so, and then restore your data from the backup you just created, through use of Migration Assistant.

Yeah, no sweat MaryRansom-that’s why I and we are here, to help

each other out…. 1 or 2 TB should be OK… run your Mac in safe mode and you should be OK..you should be able to try this alternative, maybe which works in Big Sur : https://www.elgato.com/ca/en/s/downloads.. sadly nothing I know works with Apple Silicon at least not YET… Sonoma is still too NEW I guess… nobody is forcing anyone to “buy” Sonoma afaik, I’m still

rockin’ good ol’ Mojave here** cough cough, old goat here**

"Thank you...I am in the corner of no, I didn't back up, and no, I have no idea what I would be doing. I didn't know that Sonoma was so new, and I think that I could figure out a new user set up, but if it hasn't been fixed, I guess I have to wait and hope they do it soon. I just wish they would put a note on it that it won't work yet with Sonoma!"

You are welcome.

For future reference...

About Backing Up:

Save the data elsewhere, and then format it to APFS format using Disk Utility in Recovery Mode

Refer to these Links:

Which Drive to Get:

Purchase an external drive 1.5 times the internal storage. Make sure that the original packaging reads that it is compatible with the macOS.

So, what to Do:

Use Time Machine Backup - and not a third party app. You would....

  1. Open: Disk Utility***
  2. Erase: the drive
  3. Format: with APFS format (for macOS13 and after) or Mac OS Extended (for macOS 10.12 or earlier).

***To Open Disk Utility: Go to: Applications > Utilities

You are very funny, and very smart! I already have two 2T and two 1T drives hooked up to it...I will shop for an affordable bigger one! One of the answers suggested 2T should be fine...but I am STILL scared to try it! I will look at what you sent, and see if I have the nerve. It just annoys me that the developer doesn't address it before the holidays, because anyone with Sonoma doesn't know to NOT buy it!

And here I was, so impressed with myself for upgrading for once in a timely manner! Thank you for the recs!
