Microsoft office on 2012 MacBook Air

I have an older MacBook Air which I have recently brought out of retirement and ran some updates. Now office won't work. I have Catalina installed but the new office is asking for the latest OS which I don't seem able to get on this laptop.

Any solutions? How do I get back to an older version of office that is compatible?

Thank you. I thought that was the case.

I have managed to resolve the problem by installing Office version 16.66 from the Microsoft history website then logging into my account again. It seems to be working now as long as I don't let it ruin any updates. No doubt my laptop will be defunct within a couple of years. It's already a veteran
