Sadly, that's likely to be an issue with the automated service on the other end.
Cell phones don't actually send a touch-tone signal when you press the keypad, they send a cellular message to your carrier to insert a touch-tone signal of a specific length into the audio they send to the remote end of the connection.
Many touch-tone systems cannot recognize the (often) shorter-length touch-tone signals cellular carriers send, and thus they don't respond properly.
Does this occur on all automated systems for you, or just some?
If it's all, you may want to contact your cellular carrier for further assistance.

Thanks for the speedy reply . I have only just come across this on one contact as I normally use my landline ( which works ) . I was about to get rid of the latter but maybe I should keep it
