I cannot get messages on my iPad

Check you are signed in (to your iPad) with your Apple ID:

If the Messages app won’t respond or seems frozen, you can close it, then open it again:

says how to:

"Turn on iMessage:

Go to Settings > Messages, then turn on iMessage".

also:

"To select the phone numbers and email addresses you want to use with iMessage,

go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive,

then choose from the available options below “You can receive iMessages to and reply from.”

Troubleshooting:

You need a strong wi-fi-connection for Messages. (Note: Messages to Android devices use cellular data)
