Hi,

Please clarify, do you mean that your printer is not an AirPrint-enabled model (see the list in About AirPrint - Apple Support), or just that it is not a wirelessly connected printer?

AirPrint works with wireless (Wi-Fi) or wired (Ethernet) network connections, but it must be a supported printer. For an unsupported printer, a special iOS app from the manufacturer would be required.

Please post back with the exact printer make and model.

Also, do check whether the printer firmware has been updated.

If there is a problem with AirPrint device discovery, try a full power-cycle sequence in this order (including the router): Power off the Wi-Fi router, the printer, the iPhone, and all other devices/computers. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the router. Wait two to three minutes. Power on the printer. Wait a minute or two. Power on the iPhone. Finally, power on all other devices/computers.

I have same problem but solved it after months of investigation.

turn off private WiFi address in WiFi settings.

I have it switched on on my iPad and my wife’s iPhone SE and these both still work - as does my Mac and my old iPhone 7.

It seems to be a peculiarity of iPhone 15 - and I assume the private WiFi setting stops communication between my printer (HP envy) and my iPhone 15 on my network.

Thank you for the information.

The following models are listed in the above About AirPrint article:

  • HP LaserJet Pro M201dw
  • HP LaserJet Pro M201n
  • HP LaserJet Pro M202dw
  • HP LaserJet Pro M202n

Do you have an exact model? They all ought to be OK for AirPrint printing according to the Apple list, but an HP web page https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04374174 appears to rule out the n models for some unclear reason.

Have you tried the power-cycle sequence?

Are you using a VPN? If so, any change if not enabled?

Any available printer firmware update?

Hi frankfromhampstead,

An HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw is listed as a supported model in the June 18, 2024 en-us edition of About AirPrint - Apple Support, so printing from an iPhone should be OK. Have you tried all suggestions in this discussion?

If your printer is wirelessly connected to the Wi-Fi router, you could temporarily try a wired (Ethernet) connection to one of the router's LAN ports instead (in order to rule out a Wi-Fi problem). AirPrint works with wired or wireless network connections.

Paul, I have an hp8620 printer that’s plugged into the router because it’s too old to connect wirelessly to my new router.

I got an iPhone 15 pro in May and was able to print fine until about 2 weeks ago. Now the phone sees the printer but never connects.

I tried turning off the private WiFi setting and rebooted the phone but to no avail. Still won’t connect. Any suggestions?
