Iphone is in Security Lockout Mode and not accepting existing passcode

My phone is in Security Lockout mode. I suspect the passcode was inadvertently entered several times while jogging. It told me to try again in "x" minutes. I entered the correct passcode, but it won't accept it. The time keeps extending. What can I do?

Most of the responses I have seen online deals with when you have forgotten your passcode. I have not forgotten my passcode. The phone just won't accept it. The only option it is giving me is to erase my iphone.

At one point, I would have turned off the phone so that may have also complicated the issue.
