Can I update my iPad Air 2 to iOS 14.5?

The iPad Air 2 can run the most recent version of iPadOS 15 – but nothing later. I suspect that since iPadOS 15 has been out for a while, you will not be offered iPadOS 14, just iPadOS 15.


So if you want the update, update. Posting "Yes" as the answer to your own question will not update your iPad, and we cannot update your iPad for you.

Identify your iPad model - Apple Support


If you have mis-identified your iPad Air, and it is one of the original models (models A1474, A1475, or A1476), the latest release of iOS 12 (12.5.7) is the end of the line. An original iPad Air will not offer you the option to upgrade to iPadOS 13 or later. This will not change. If you own an original iPad Air and want to run a newer iPadOS, you will need to get a newer iPad.


If your iPad is, indeed, an iPad Air 2 (model number A1566 or A1567), you can update it to iPadOS 15, but you will have to do it yourself. We cannot update it for you.

The iPad Air2 is capable of update to iPadOS 15.8. The Air2 does not support iPadOS 16.x or later.


Whether or not you are able to update any iPad to a newer version of iOS/iPadOS will be dictated by the iPad model - and the currently installed version of iOS. You can find this information here:

Settings > General > About

Here is a list of the highest version of iOS supported by the older models of iPad (for simplicity - “generations” are shortened to a number) that are restricted in their ability to be updated:


32-bit devices (obsolete)

iPad1 - iOS 5.1.1

iPad2, iPad3 and iPad mini1 - iOS 9.3.5 (WiFi Only models), iOS 9.3.6 (WiFi & Cellular)

iPad4 - iOS 10.3.3 (WiFi Only), iOS 10.3.4 (WiFi & Cellular)


64-bit devices

iPad Air1, iPad mini2 and iPad mini3 - iOS 12.5.7

iPad Air2, iPad mini4 - iPadOS 15.8

iPad5, iPad Pro (9.7"/12.9" first generation) - iPadOS 16.7.2


Newer models are all able to be updated to the current version - iPadOS 17.1

  • iPad Pro 12.9" (2nd generation and later)
  • iPad Pro 11" (1st generation and later)
  • iPad Pro 10.5"
  • iPad Air (3rd generation and later)
  • iPad (6th generation and later)
  • iPad mini (5th generation and later)

Be aware that while an iPad may be capable of update, in some circumstances you may need to use a computer to perform the update*. To do so, you will need access to either a Windows PC (with iTunes for Windows installed) or a Mac (with iTunes or Finder - as appropriate for the installed version of MacOS). Ensure that your installed version of iTunes has been updated to the most recent version; the essential device drivers are included.

If you have a beta profile installed, ensure this has been removed from your iPad - as, otherwise, installation of production software updates may be inhibited. This support page provides the necessary information to remove the beta from your iPad:

You should note that for your iPad to install an available update, its battery must be charged to at least 50% capacity - and/or be connected to its Power Adapter. Similarly, the iPad can only be updated over a standard WiFi connection - or be updated by a PC or Mac using iTunes or Finder - over a USB connection.

An iPad Air 2 can support up to iPadOS 15.8. If you are now at 12.5.7 and no upgrades are offered by Software Update, that suggests that you have the original iPad Air, not the iPad Air 2.

Tap where I've indicated in the above image. The longer number will change to a shorter one:



If that Model Number code is A1474, A1475, or A1476, it is the original iPad Air and cannot be upgraded past iOS 12.5.7.
