Has it worked OK in the past?

A shot in the dark . . . try deleting the preferences.

Shut down iMovie and then hold down the Option and Command keys whilst launching until a window pops up.

Click the "Delete" button.

Whenever iMovie behaves strangely for no apparent reason, deleting the preferences is a good first troubleshooting strategy.

Many thanks for the reply. iMovies up to date, PC up to date. I've Shutdown iMOVIE, restarted the PC, cleared old files to gain space, uninstalled and re installed i movie. Tried making new copies of the iMovies library and iMovie theater. Virus check. Same results. I made a change on an old project that I was able to export to file, no go. I then made a new movie with a clean copy of iMovie, same results. I ended up going to my office and getting my MacBook Air which runs on Sonoma 14 and have never used iMovie on. I made a short test movie and was able to export to file. I then air dropped, and replaced the iMovies library and iMovie theater from my PRO to my AIR. Shut down iMovies and viola! The office AIR populated with all PRO info and I was able to make the movie in mp4 format. This is not a solution to the problem but rather a desperate act at 2AM. I will contact APPLE for a fix however. Many thanks!

Hi, Ian,

You are one of the lucky ones. Numerous people have complained on this forum of being unable to export from iMovie after upgrading to Sonora. And that includes people who have updated to 14.1. One poster said that he had a lengthy discussion with Apple Support and the techs there confirmed that there was a problem and that they were working on it.

So, there is something about Sonora that causes a conflict with the systems on the Macs of many (although apparently not all) Apple users. I have not yet seen a solution despite trying the several diagnostic procedures that often work for problems of this type. I am confidant that Apple will fix it, however, since export functionality is critical to the iMovie app.

Good to hear from you.
