Opinion About Midnight Black color of Macbook Air

I picked up my new MacBook Air M3 yesterdday in Midnight. The color is beautiful BUT fingerprints/smudges ARE a problem. Apple publicized having addressed this issue with "a coating" that would repel fingerprint smudges on the midnight colored machines? So I felt happy and confident with my color choice. IF they actually put a coating on, it does nothing to keep fingerprints and smudges off. I'm annoyed to see them on the case AND keys of the keyboard after Apple communicated this issue was solved.

Midnight is a very dark blue. It’s called “ Midnight”. It has been known to show fingerprints. If you want a dark colour, you might like space grey. It’s a dark grey, not black. Sort of a graphite tone. Doesn’t really show fingerprints. The newer M3 models will be coming out in Space Black and Apple says they won’t show fingerprints. I haven’t seen one to know.

I have Starlight and it’s a very light champagne gold colour and doesn’t show prints.

Personally I think space grey is the best colour but it’s up to you.

I was worried about the smudges so I bought the cloth like another poster indicated. The bigger issue is it chips just looking at it. I have chips from I don’t know what since I don’t travel with it and it never leaves my desk table. Google it and you’ll find Reddit threads showing how it chips at the ports and gets really nasty looking. So cheap. I called customer service they sent me to the “Genius Bar” where they told me it was normal wear and tear (after 3 months of light usage). I find Apple maddening. Ok Apple, just admit the design flaw but they never will. They never do.

Just got my new M3 MacBook Air today. Midnight Black is perfect.

Any dark color on anything is a bear to keep clean and will show even the tiniest marring, just like the black car that I have, it shows everything within a day or two of cleaning and polishing. If you are concerned about showing fingerprints and teeny spots, don't buy a dark anything.

I have the 15 inch MBA M2 Midnight. The fingerprints aren't very noticeable to me. I wipe it down once a week or so.

I chose the Starlight color when I ordered mine...just seemed like a "cleaner" color than Midnight.

Just exballed the new “Space Black” in person.

IMO it’s more of a “Graphite” than “black.”

Certainly not the matte BLACK of the ThinkPads from a couple of decades ago.

Not much is more fun than opening-up a shiny-new Apple device.

I ordered the Midnight Black M3 (March 8 delivery) and it should be protected from the smudge problem of pre-2024 MacBook Airs (midnight blue) with the same treatment that is used on MacPro laptops. My son recently bought a MacPro so I was able to see that it does work to avoid fingerprint problems

Same problems with it as on our black Caddy SRX ... everything from dust to smudges to finger prints and bug_guts shows up as if it were planned to do so.

but the price was way right so .....

I use Whoosh! electronics cleaner, but that doesn't work as well on the keyboard as it does on the screen. What do you use?

I thought I’d checkout the new “Space Black” of the recently announced M3 MBPs …

… but alas they are not yet on-display in the Bellevue, WA Apple Store. (a day too early). 🙁

Alas, yes...the new M3's won't be in the stores until tomorrow.
