Can I use migration assistant with only the SD drive from the old computer?

My old 2015 MacBook Air died. I purchased another 2015 MacBook Air, same model. I have been using the new one. I need to migrate all old files to the new machine. I have purchased a drive holder for the SD from the old machine.

Can I use migration assistant and how to go about it?

Earlier Mac models

Perhaps. You have nothing to lose by attempting it. I can't be certain only because I never tried it myself.

Refer to Transfer to a new Mac with Migration Assistant - Apple Support, and when asked where to transfer the information choose "From a Mac, Time Machine backup or Startup disk". The storage module would be considered a startup disk.
