I have updated my macOS to Sonoma 14.1.
However, now most of the time when I try to save a file into the file system from any type of application (browser, MS word, preview,...), the window for selecting the directory and file name gets stuck and the only way to close it is to press ESC.

I was having this problem all the way up through Sonoma 14.4.1. Various applications were unable to save files either intermittently or at all. I finally downloaded the Google Drive installer, quit Google Drive, and reinstalled it. Things are working again so far.

If you haven't rebooted since you updated to 14.1, try doing a reboot. If that doesn't help, try a safe boot and then
after that, boot back to your normal login and test it out again.

Update to Sonoma 14.1.1
I mostly like using Stage Manager, but I'm noticing the glitchiness that comes along with it. I have this same problem. Toggling Stage Manager off and then on again helped this morning. But who knows if this was a one-time bandaid solution. Hope it helps a little bit!
I am having this problem too. Turning off Google Drive has helped. Seems like something with Google Drive, icloud and/or Time Machine is causing this very real and serious bug.
Quick test to see if this bug is hitting: Open Textedit, try to save. With the bug active, Textedit freezes until it is Forced Quit.
Apple Support has been guiding me through hoops to try to fix this in Sonoma 14.2. Do they know it's MacOS? Are they just not admitting it?
A contemporaneous bug is that the MacOS TextEdit app slows down to a crawl, buffering keystrokes with about a 2-5 minute delay. And yes, it also will no longer save to PDF.
I have tried after the update to Sonoma 14.1.1, after again a reboot, a safe boot and then boot back to the normal login.
The problem still remains.
It is not related to any specific application and happens about 50% of the time. Even with Safari, I experience a stuck in folder selection when downloading files.

With Sonoma in any app I SAVE and select the folder and I see my items sorted by dates but I want my items and folders sorted by name . (the way I have them when I view in OS (ie not in an app like WORD)

Is there any solution to this problem? I'm experiencing the same issue. I have Sonoma 12.2.1 on my MacBook pro 2023
So you click on the Name tab and thew folder is sorted by name A-Z. Click it gain and it changes to Z-A. Click on the Created or Modified and it sorts by date
Sonoma 14.5 problem is actual, can't save or open files in all programmes. works occasionally. how to solve the problem? workflow stopped because of this error
Reboot, safe boot, Terminal commands to show hidden files—none of that worked. What worked for me was going into System Preferences and toggling off iCloud Drive option Sync This Mac, then turning on again.
