Apple Vision Pro is now available in the U.S.

Mac Studio no internet connection [using cat 6e], but WiFi does work

Just got this Mac Studio, finally had time to waste with migration one to one.

Don't do it a waste of time. Use a cloned copy of startup drive.

To migrate from.

Anyway not happy for this new way of wasting data transfer..

So WiFi does works, but no Ethernet internet connection

Just to add,,,

Also might try putting these in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers:, for that Interface...

208.67.222.222

208.67.220.220

Apply. These Servers have been patched to guard against DNS poisoning, and are faster/more reliable than most ISP's DNS Servers.

What DNS servers are used with Earthlink/Mindspring ?...

Users who have DSL provisioned by Covad should use these:

207.69.188.186

207.69.188.185

207.69.188.187

The DNS servers for Earthlink (there are many others, I believe... someone else add as needed...) are:

207.217.126.81

207.217.120.83

207.217.77.82

NOTE: To manually Opt Out of the redirecting DNS that Earthlink has shoved down our throats forced upon us then use the IPs here:

»EarthLink DSL FAQ »What are the DNS Opt Out Servers for the Redirecting Earthlink DNS Problem?

207.69.188.172 (East Coast)

207.69.188.171 (West Coast)

If you are on the East Coast use it as your Primary DNS entry and use the West Coast as your Secondary DNS entry. If you are on the West Coast use it as your Primary DNS entry and use East Coast as your Secondary DNS entry. It is best to hard code these into your Router only and let the Router give the DNS to your PCs via normal DHCP instead of manually having to hard code multiple PCs. Most Routers have a settings location to place DNS entries.

Wi-Fi is slow and prone to fail for large moves.

A direct Ethernet connection is more reliable but still really slow.

I moved away from using Time Machine on slow spinning HDDs some year ago.

I used CCC Clones on 2.5" SSDs for the last two moves and moved +300GB in under an hour.

My next move will be done using a CCC Clone on a https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/envoy-express/thunderbolt-3

Packets going toward the Internet are sent to the TOPMOST Working interface shown in

System Preferences > Network...

to make the built-in Ethernet Mac Studio Interface TOPMOST, use the gear icon below the left 'list of interfaces' box and choose "set service order' and drag Ethernet TOPMOST, Wifi-Next.

what is the Status of Ethernet shown in the Ethernet pane?

Nov 8, 2023 7:30 AM in response to fritzer

The problem with Ethernet not showing web pages is likely to be Domain Name Server (DNS) -- telephone number lookup for the Internet.

Yours is pointing at the IP address of your ROUTER to get DNS lookups. That is often not good enough.

The litmus test:

open a Browser and enter:

1.1.1.1 and press return.

if you get the CloudFlare** splash page, your internet connection is working fine, your DNS is not fine.

**CloudFlare is NOT part of the solution, they just have the easiest to remember all-numeric IP address.

The solution:

Best is to find the 2 IP addresses DNS numbers your ISP uses. You can get them from your Wi-Fi interface when its working, or from your Router. If they are not used automatically, enter them manually.

You could also try OpenDNS:

208.67.220.220

208.67.222.222

some use Google DNS, and you can look those up, but I hesitate to provide the numbers for a company that earns ALL its money selling your data.

Sorry to hear of your migration experience, mine was quite different.

The Migration Assistant worked too well; some issues I had with my existing iMac (i.e. dictation not working etc) transferred right over to my new Mac Studio. There was no way of telling what other problems I had that transferred over so I had to wipe clean my brand new Mac Studio - re-install the operating system.

But during the transfer process I used a Thunderbolt 4 cable. I can't speak to why you have no ethernet connection. Good luck to you.

Actual Speed:

The good way to check the actual connection speed USED to be Network Utility, But in Catalina and later, Apple has deprecated Network Utility and now you have to use a Terminal command to see your actual connection speed. First, you need to know what en number the link is. then you use a command like this one, substituting the actual en number.

my main Ethernet connection uses BSD name en2 (as shown in) :

 menu > about this Mac > (system report) > network:

Aquantia AQC107-B0:

Name: ethernet

Type: Ethernet Controller

Bus: PCI

Slot: Slot-3

Vendor ID: 0x1d6a

Device ID: 0x87b1

Subsystem Vendor ID: 0x1d6a

Subsystem ID: 0x0001

Revision ID: 0x0002

Link Width: x4

BSD name: en2

Kext name: AppleEthernetAquantiaAqtion.kext

Location: /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleEthernetAquantiaAqtion.kext

Version: 1.0.64

Terminal command:

ifconfig en2 | grep media

with this as my output for 10 Gigabit Ethernet:

media: 10Gbase-T <full-duplex,flow-control>

For ‘regular’ Gigabit Ethernet, you should get this instead:

media: 1000baseT <full-duplex,flow-control>

Nov 12, 2023 3:31 PM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

Errors detected:

To see if an Ethernet link is throwing more than a handful of initial errors, you can use Terminal command:

netstat -I en2

This is the resulting output. Counters are In-packets, In-errors, Out-packets, Out-Errors, Collisions. There should never be more than handful of errors from starting up, and in most cases, NONE.

Name       Mtu   Network       Address            Ipkts Ierrs    Opkts Oerrs  Coll

en2   8163  <Link#4>    00:01:d2:1a:00:dd   696697     0   484301     0     0

en2   8163  grantsmacpr fe80:4::461:ea0d:   696697     -   484301     -     -

en2   8163  192.168.0/23  192.168.0.204     696697     -   484301     -     -

If the link were running beyond its ability to run and be stable, for example it auto-speeded to 10Gb but the cabling could only reliably support 2.5Gb, we would see non-zero errors counts, and errors increasing over time. (and possibly, disconnecting)
