Download all my iCloud pics to external drive

I would like to download all of my photos from iCloud to an external drive in order to free up space in my (now full) iCloud acct. I am using a Macbook Pro 15" and accessing my iCloud.com account via Google. Most all the sites I have found say in order to select all images, hold down CMD + A, however this does not appear to do anything. I have not found any other way in the iCloud app to select "all." I have about 28G worth of photos, if that matters at all.

Does anyone have a different method to select all, or to move photos off of iCloud?

TIA...

Getting a Copy if iCloud Contents:

A. Download All of iCloud Drive:

You can download all of iCloud, and then search through the iCloud download using a the Search Bar on the top-right corner of a new Finder window. Use my User Tip: Getting a Quick and Direct "iCloud Drive-to-External Hard Drive" Download - User Tip

B. Download the Rest of iCloud:
