Apple Vision Pro is now available in the U.S.

Sonoma 14.1 Mirroring display instead of extending

On my MacBook Air 2022 with a samsung extended display.

Suddenly it's mirroring, but when chrome is on my laptop screen the samsung monitor is black.

In settings it says the samsung is extending my desktop, but it behaves like it's mirroring. If I swipe from one desktop to another, both screens changed.

I have:

  • restarted
  • updated sonoma
  • changed the display settings to mirror and back to extended
  • changed the diplay refresh rate
  • plugged and unplugged power
  • plugged and unplugged the UDB-C HDMI cord

help!

Update:

I have been working with Apple Support and here's where we've got to:

  • the problem persists in safe mode
  • the problem persists when I removed all my login items and restarted
  • I created a test user account (an admin), logged in as that user, and the issue was RESOLVED

Still haven't been able to locate what it is in my user settings that is causing the problem, but wanted to give you an update

OMG I FINALLY HAVE A SOLUTION.

After multiple calls to Apple support and HOURS working with them, it was ready to be escalated to the developers, then they called me back and said try this:

  1. Go into settings/Desktop and dock
  2. Scroll down to Mission Control
  3. Make sure "Displays have separate spaces" is switched ON

Problem solved.

WTAF. Why would an OS update change this setting????

Can never get those hours of my life back, but at least it's solved now.

Fingers crossed it works for you, too

Same problem, MacBook Air 2020 M1; Updated to the latest version [Jan 3rd, 2024]

It is not confined to "Chrome", I use Safari. This encompass the whole computer behavior

With Dell monitors (doesn't matter which one I tried)

All monitors have to be on the same "desktop", meaning I can't open something on my mac on desktop 1, and on the monitor to be on desktop 2.

it will switch the mac to desktop 2.

How does it look?

built in display: "desktop 1, desktop 2, desktop 3"

Dell monitor: "desktop 1, desktop 2, desktop 3"

Adding/removing a desktop from one of the screens matches the other

previous to Nov update:

built in display: "desktop 1, desktop 2, desktop 3"

Dell monitor: "desktop 4, desktop 5, desktop 6"

each monitor was independent.

I have

  • Restarted mac
  • Changed displays, and cables and type (meaning C, HDMI, Displayport)
  • Safe mod
  • Switching back and forth with "extended" -> "mirroring" options
  • Support said to press "options" every now and then, didn't work

What did work:

Creating a new user [as the guy above suggested]. the new user doesn't "suffer" from that bug.

Help. Bump. Something
