Free MS Word for macOS Catalina
My Word 2008 stopped working when I upgraded to macOS Catalina. I need Word to access all my documents.

Microsoft Word is not “free”. It never has been.
Microsoft no longer supports macOS Catalina. You can no longer get a version of Microsoft Office that will run on that version of macOS.

Also, I believe the free Pages from Apple will open Word docs.
Pages is already installed on your MacBook Air...it will read (and write) Word documents...I'd go with that.
