Is ios17 going to burn battery up on 6th generation ipad

Updating your iPad to a more recent version of iPadOS will not, of itself, reduce the overall performance your iPad battery. That said, after performing the update, your iPad may appear to cause your battery to deplete more quickly for a short period of time.

After performing an update, background housekeeping tasks (such as re-indexing the file system) will be running in the background - this increased activity will obviously deplete the battery a little quicker. After a few days, battery utilisation should largely return to pre-update performance.
