System clock gone crazy after sonoma upgrade

Hello :)

I've just upgraded to Sonoma, and the system clock started to malfunction.

The clock shows wrong time after the first sleep after the upgrade (before the first sleep, it was fine):

  • When set on "automatic", it sets on january 2021 (I tried apple server and google server). The fact the date is so old would block me from accessing the internet.
  • When set on "manual", I can change the date and hour fine but if I put my mac in sleep at say 1am, the next morning the clock is set on 1am and I have to change it manually again.

I have tried to ... with no results:

  • toggle on/off all possible options on the system setting hour & date screen
  • safe boot

Other frustrating bugs in app Notes (unrelated to clock but related to sonoma)

  • can't select multiple words with cmd anymore, only one at a time
  • can't select with cmd while scrolling with mouse wheel anymore
  • when font size is small, bullet list "–" now shows same interline spacing as if the font size wasn't reduced, while bullet lists "•" and numbered lists aren't't affected.

If there are no solutions to these bugs, I'm considering reverting to Ventura but I'm not sure how to do it without losing data I've been working on since I've upgraded.

Thank you so much for your help!!

I raised an apple support case for this. We repeated the steps and they grabbed the logs. After the case was escalated they instructed me to run this command from the terminal. sudo mv /var/db/timed/com.apple.timed.plist ~/Destop ; sudo reboot

Thank you for posting this.

In the interest of other user who may try this, please note that there is a typo in the above command. It will work, but just not exactly as intended. It should naturally be "Desktop" instead of "Destop":

sudo mv /var/db/timed/com.apple.timed.plist ~/Desktop ; sudo reboot

and the interested user show be aware that he/she will be requested to type the password; there is no *** or ••• while typing - just type blindly and press enter.

Regarding the time issue:

I am on a 2019 MacBook and I do not experience any of these symptoms. I am sure that if these were widespread we'd have heard it loud and clear. So far I have seen only one other report using 14.1 where automatic timing was producing incorrect times.

Start by resetting NVRAM. This alone may well fix the time problem.

I have the same issue! 2019 MacBook Pro 16" Intel.

Tried sudo rm /var/db/timed/com.apple.timed.plist, this is what apple support also suggested. first time it works. next day after sleep or reboot back to square one of past date and time.

They told me the issue is with Apple team, its reported already and they may have a solution soon...

Til then manual changes, or run that command and boots :) NVRAM reset or SMC reset didn't help.
