My iPad’s max battery capacity is down to 84% after 197 cycles. Is that normal?

I’ve had an iPad Air 3 for the past 4 years. Its original max capacity was 8335 mAh, but it’s now down to 7010 mAh after 197 cycles. I’m slightly worried battery life will not hold up to Apple’s promised 1000 cycles at 80% original max capacity.

How are you establishing your battery health/cycle count? iOS/iPadOS for iPad doesn't have a Battery Health feature - and neither does it natively expose the cycle count. 197 cycles in over four years of use might itself be questionable.

Using unsupported methods to access the battery cycle count - such as using third-party Shortcuts to read data from Analytics files - may at best be unreliable, if they work at all. System software updates may change the format and content of Analytics data, requiring appropriate update of associated Shortcuts.

There are third-party software packages for Windows PC and Mac that can access battery cycle count. Popular choices for Mac are Coconut Battery and iMazing - whereas iMazing is available for PC.

As described, your iPad battery may simply be ageing. Batteries don't last forever and will eventually need to replaced.

If you are experiencing difficulties, you can seek assistance directly from Apple Support - who can run a remote battery diagnostic if required. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad:
