Using a Sandisk Extreme Portable 1T SSD I’m not seeing it?

I’m trying to use a new sandisk extreme portable ssd card on my 1st gen Apple IPad Pro with lighting cable. I have a adapter with lighting male plugged into the IPad Pro a Lightning power plugged into the adapter and a 3.0 USB plugged into the adapter from the Sandisk ssd. It’s not coming up on the Apple File app locations list? Do I need to reformat the card and if so how do I reformat and what’s the best format for pictures and videos?

Should formatting and/or partitioning of external storage devices ever be required, this must be performed using a separate computer - such as a Windows PC or Mac computer; iPad does not provide any facility to format an external storage device.

To be recognised by iPadOS, the attached USB storage device must be formatted to FAT, FAT32, exFAT, APFS or HFS+ with a single partition. Microsoft NTFS and other proprietary device formatting are not supported.

More information about connection to external devices and storage can be found in the iPad User Guide - along with other frequently overlooked information about your iPad and iPadOS:
