MacOS Mail Trash subfolder problem

I am running MacOS Sonoma 14.0 on a 13-inch, 2020 MacBook Pro.

Unfortunately I have a problem with Mail, Version 16.0 (3774.100.2.1.4).

Sometimes Mail creates a 'Trash' subfolder. (see image reference below).

I can't stop this from happening. I can delete the subfolder easily (right click → delete Mailbox).

When I delete an Email on my iPhone 13 Pro (iOS Version 17.0.2) the subfolder in Mail on my MacBook Pro will be created again.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Any know solutions?

Thank you,

Jordy

Yes, this is a known issue with Mail in macOS Sonoma 14.0. It is caused by a bug in the way that Mail handles deleted emails from iCloud accounts.

There is no known workaround for this issue at this time, but Apple is aware of it and is working on a fix.

In the meantime, you can delete the Trash subfolder as needed. It will be recreated the next time you delete an email from your iCloud account.

Here is a possible workaround that some users have reported to be successful:

  1. Open Mail and go to Mail > Preferences.
  2. Click on the Accounts tab.
  3. Select your iCloud account in the sidebar.
  4. Click on the Mailbox Behaviors tab.
  5. Under Move deleted messages to:, select Deleted Messages.
  6. Click Close.

This will change the default location for deleted emails from your iCloud account to the Deleted Messages folder.

If you are still experiencing the problem after changing this setting, you may need to wait for Apple to release a fix.

No, not here on 3 computers running Sonoma 14.1.1 nor on iPhone 14 running iOS 17.1.1
