Apple Software nerds screwed up the photos 20 second job takes hours now

They can't simply leave well enough alone. My photos are no longer jpg. Now they are HEIC which is unusable anywhere but on my stupidphone. Two problems:

  1. I no longer can select all 300 phots from a trip and slide them over from iPhone to laptop folder. Nope. Maybe three come across and that's it. Try it again and maybe a couple more but you have to answer the question of ignore or copy over each time and you never know when you're done unless you count the photos in source and destination. This time I copied each photo across one by one. Success - but I am substantially older now than when I started.
  2. What in **** is this HEIC???? I know what it is but why would they make the change in the upgrade and screw up all of my photos? I would have NEVER opted for an oddball format that makes it unusable elsewhere because I don't keep my life on my phone. I keep photos to a minimum (you know - to keep the weight of my phone down). Now it is up to me to figure this out for each photo.

Had an iPhone since I got rid of my flip phone but this kind of nonsense has me looking elsewhere.

Now I'm ready to send this off and am looking down where I read, "Tag your question." I have no Idea what that means so I am guessing that I will get a ding or email or text or something when somebody replies to this but I don't know PLUS I have no idea which device is which. I guess that's a "me" issue since I didn't set them up as "upstairs PC" and "kitchen laptop." I just called them something like "Thing 1" and Thing 2." Then I must select a topic. iPhone? Photos" Well, it's both really so I'll just pick one so I can move on.

So, somewhere in all that I think you have issues with your phone taking heic format. Why not set it to take jpeg? (BTW other camera and phone makers are now beginning to adopt heic too, as it's better quality at smaller file sizes). You've also got some issue with moving your photos to your computer, but you don't tell us how you're doing that, nor even what OS I on that machine. So hard to assist there. Tagging makes your query easier for others to find, which would be a good thing, but it's not compulsory.

Not sure I've answered any - not to mind all - of your questions, but they're kind of buried in all the other stuff so that they are hard to make out. Do post again but next time focus more on the issues and less on your feelings. You'll get better assistance, and faster.

Fair enough

As far as changing my iPhone BACK to jpg - I think I did that in settings although it wasn’t called that; it was called “Most Compatible.” Then I spent a few hours copying and saving the photos as jpgs one-by-one. I am glad I didn’t discover this photo format switcharoo after a site inspection with 1,200 photos.

(Oops! Sorry . That was a feeling.)

I am running IOS 10.7.2 and, using the charger cord into a USB port, I highlight the photos and drag them into a folder on my laptop which is running Windows 11. That’s what I USED to do. Now I have to drag each photo over one at a time. Super fun!

(Oops! That ALSO was a feeling.)

Except for this morning when I opened each photo into whatever app my laptop defaulted to (I think it is called photos but it doesn’t say anywhere. I am guessing after using task manager to see what shows up after the app opens.) Once opened in that app, I saved it into my laptop folder as a jpg. Then I repeated that 149 times.

For some reason copying en masse no longer works but it doesn't acknowledge that it didn’t copy 147 of the 150 photos. It just copies a few and behaves as though it completed the task. That’s why I have to drag the photos over to my laptop one at a time.

Thanks

Sure except I don't know if the issue is with my iPhone, the IOS 10.7.2, my Dell laptop, Windows 11, or me so I wouldn't know which tag to pick. So, is a tag simply a category of what the subject issue is so it can be lumped with other similar issues and maybe found by going straight to the tag? It seems that there are a limited number of tags available so there could be a wide variety of issues under say "Windows 11." Also, If I guess wrong and the issue turns out to be related to IOS 10.7.2 then the thread could be forever mis-tagged.

Another issue presented itself when I was re-saving each of my photos. I copied them each over to my laptop exactly the same way but a few of them came over at a resolution not much better than that of a desktop icon. My solution: email each of THOSE photos to myself and open them with my photo edit software and then save them from there into my laptop folder. This can't be right but that is what I have to do to get photos off of my camera now. If so, then I might ditch my phone and use my old digital camera with an SD card.

It is infuriating like people stated to do a simple 20 second pic task & then this poster nonsense is a nightmare. My cats could do a better job! Sometimes, the contact name gets blurred / hidden! Who in the world thought this was a good idea? I just give up!! Thanks much.

When the wonderful calendar got switched, many of us were upset “reinventing that wheel, too” It never got corrected back. I have to check & re-check my appt. / notation got there & then the date can change. Another 20-30 second easy task is now **** with many going back & checking over & over. I have an iPhone 15.

This must be an ego thing to do this by the software engineer??? I don’t get it!

STOP REINVENTING THE WHEEL!
