iPad OS 17 Apps

After I update to OS17 , will I be able to remove apps that I'm not using ?

I'm experiencing a space issue and know that I won't use them all .

I have read about so many problems with the 17 version that I'm afraid to update it .

I have been using Apple products since 2003 and this was never an issue .

Please tell me that this isn't a tactic to sell more iCloud storage ?

iPad, iPadOS 16

Apps are not stored in iCloud. They are only on your device. iPadOS 17.1.1 doesn't have lots (any?) new apps. Even if it did, built-in apps take very little space.

As babowa suggested, for most people, the biggest user of space is photos and videos. You might want to review this article:

iCloud storage space is not necessary for updating your device. But, having enough space on the device itself is.

I've updated and have no problems at all. I do not use any iCloud storage. I back up my iPads to my iMac with a large hard drive and I always make sure that I leave plenty of empty storage space at all times. If I need/want any stored photos, I air drop them to my iMac and delete them from the iPad.

Note: if you need space, removing/moving photos, videos, etc. to an external drive makes much more sense.Apps themselves do not occupy all that much space, videos and photos do.
