Quicktime not recording screen

I'm trying to use Quicktime to record my screen. I've done it multiple times in the past, with no problem. However, right now, when I click on "New Screen Recording" a window pops up that says "Quicktime Player encountered and error while recording your screen. Try using the Screenshot app instead."

Quicktime works fine when playing existing videos. I've also quit Quicktime and restarted my Mac. I've even updated Quicktime, all to no avail.

Can anyone help me fix the problem please?

you can use the "shift-command-5" keyboard shortcut to launch a new screen recording. (AKA "screenshot app") it uses the same settings and shares the same controls with the QTP app and the results get played back with QTP.

the last time I tried using QTP > File > New Screen Recording was back on Monterey. but the keyboard shortcut always worked. since then I have used the shortcut. I just checked now, and I can once again use QTP to perform a screen recording. I'm running sonoma. but I am kind of hesitant to recommend upgrading to sonoma just to fix this issue, as it sounds like using QTP was working for you previously on Ventura. although I usually recommend running the most current macOS that a specific Mac can run.

other than that, have you installed any antivirus apps on any such app that claims to "speed up" or "clean up" or otherwise "optimize" your Mac?
