Macbook Pro 2014 won't boot to recovery mode

Help. I tried searching the discussions but nothing clear is coming up.

Last night, I saw that my machine (MPB mid2014, Big Sur) suddenly open to the OS Utilities window - I wasn't using the machine at the time.

I shut down and rebooted, and things seemed back to normal. But the same thing happened this evening. I shut down, did a PRAM and SMC reset, logged in ok but as apps were reloading the machine froze, reset, and now I can't get to the Recovery Utilities window again despite holding cmd-R at start up. It goes straight to Internet Recovery mode when I try or otherwise comes up with the Question Mark folder screen.

I want to get to Utilities to use Disk Utility to check my SSD - I don't want to do an Internet Recovery reinstall!

Any help greatly appreciated 🙏🏻 ☹

I am not aware of any other SSD enclosures which are compatible with the proprietary Apple SSD connector. Plus you need one which is able to work with an NVMe based SSD. Even if you get the OWC Envoy Pro Enclosure, you need to make sure it is the more recent version since the older model of the enclosure did not work with the OWC Aura NVMe SSD....in fact, OWC noted that both the OWC SSD & Envoy Pro enclosure could be damaged. I see OWC has a newer version of the Envoy Pro Enclosure which works even with the OWC Aura NVMe SSD.

If you look at the product page for the Envoy Pro Enclosure, it mentions USB 3.2 (10Gb/s) speed....not sure if that is just referring to the capabilities of USB 3.2 in general or if that means the enclosure is actually capable of 10Gb/s speeds when connected to a computer with a USB 3 port capable of 10Gb/s although they do have a footnote mentioning the USB-C ports on the host Mac so with the Apple Thunderbolt3/USB3 cable it may be able to actually handle those speeds.

Edit: The product specs do mention using USB 3.2 Gen 1 which is rated up to 10Gb/s, so with the proper host computer you probably can achieve the SSD's max speed potential.
